Holland Cooper in the Making

Tweed – Where it all began

Tweed is a Great British fabric; woven for centuries in the UK. In the early decades tweed was the attire of choice by people living in the country as it is known for its warmth, strength and practicality. With these qualities on offer, tweed was naturally adopted in the equestrian world. Tweed was also once worn by women in the workplace and for cycling when the pursuit first became a trend in society.

Yorkshire and Scotland are renowned for their excellence in the textile industry. After the Second World War they were the largest exporters of tweed and textiles in the world, and although the size of the industry has decreased since then, the mills in these areas are still the most sought after the world over.

Tweed is now so much more than a working, practical fabric. Regularly seen on the catwalk; tweed has become a favourite to many designers, and due to recent demand has begun immerging on the high street. Tweed has been accredited and praised in Vogue for its elegance, timeless qualities and deemed the epitome of British style.

Holland Cooper Style

Each year we carefully source new tweeds to ensure they are woven using the perfect mixture of traditional and contemporary methods, along with meeting our aesthetic requirements. We have the toughest criteria when sourcing and creating our tweeds. We want tweed that is unique, luxurious and stylish; with colours that work together in a collection to compliment and contrast each other. Tweed that impresses in both a traditional and an eccentric design; as we strive to offer a collection that our customers can buy to suit their own style whether that is unique and contrasting or traditional and matching tastes.

Just a short drive away from London, we have a number of favourite remnant shops that we always enjoy visiting to find unique finishing’s for our garments and accessories. These shops and boutiques are like an Aladdin’s cave, and we never know what treasures we may find. What we love most about these sources is they offer us something special and unique for each piece, as most of what we find is limited edition or one-off pieces. From hand made buttons to our famous silks which have featured everything from pheasants to seahorses; it is these treasures that grant our trendsetting garments to be timeless keepsakes.

How it’s done!

Our tweeds are then delivered to our studio; which is set in the scenic Suffolk countryside, along with the finest Italian suede and luxurious satin which form the core of our collection. It is here in the studio where all the magic happens, everything from the early designing stages to cutting every garment by hand. Each garment is then sewn by a highly experienced tailor/dress maker in the local area. It is this intimate and thoughtful production process that makes us utterly British, just like the tweed we use.
