Behind the Game
It is believed Polo originated in China and Persia around 2,000 years ago, making it the oldest team sport. The game was discovered by British tea planters on the Burmese borders in 1850s. It was these Brits that founded the world’s first polo club in Silchar, west of Manipur.
The first real rules of the game were formulated by John Watson in the 1870’s. Watson was a key player at the All Ireland Polo Club and he also formed the celebrated Freebooters team who won the first Westchester Cup match in 1886.
The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire founded in 1872 by Captain Francis “Tip” Herbert. Others; including Hurlingham followed quickly after.
The first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September 1875
Handicaps were introduced by the USA in 1888. England and India adopted this concept in 1910.
Today, more than 77 countries play polo. It was an Olympic sport from 1900 -1939 and has now been recognised again by the International Olympic Committee.
